Great Britain Head for European Track Championships

Last year, Steven Burke was pleased with a Bronze in the Europeans - in 2008 he won Bronze in the Olympics to show just how quickly he is making progress in the sport. He gets to test the track for the Track Worlds next year at the Europeans in just over a week.

Hot on the heels of the great success in the Beijing Olympics, the Great Britain Cycling Team are full steam ahead for London 2012 as they take a young team of riders to Poland for the European Track Championships. Included in the team is Olympic Bronze medallist Steven Burke and World Champion Women’s Team Pursuiter Joanna Rowsell . The event will be an important stepping stone in the development of riders for the London 2012 Olympic Games and beyond.

The team is divided up into two squads, one made up of Juniors and the other Under 23 riders. Within these two squads are the sprinters and the endurance riders, both male and female.

As well as Steven Burke, who has stepped up a level or three since his Bronze medal at the European Track Championships in Cottbus last year, the Under 23 squad is packed with talented riders. They include Peter Kennaugh who in his first year with the Olympic Academy has already won a major road race in Italy and been on the podium as well recently showing that his form is in tip top shape before this performance target for the Academy riders.

He is joined in the endurance events such as the Team Pursuit by former World Junior Pursuit champion Andy Tennant, Olympic medallist Steven Burke and Mark McNally. Both Kennaugh and McNally rode the Europeans last year and won the Team Pursuit title for the Junior category. In the Women’s events, both Lizzie Armitstead and Joanna Rowsell have tasted success at European and World level and will be among the favourites for their events.

The Under 23 Sprint team is also packed with riders who will be among the favourites for their events. Whilst the Olympic riders have been competing in Beijing, the riders in the Sprint team for Poland have been busy training at Manchester including the likes of Matt Crampton who medalled at the European’s last year and Gold medallist last year at the Europeans Anna Blyth. Joining them in the Under 23 races will be World Champions in the Junior category in 2007, Dave Daniell and Christian Lyte.

    Juniors

The Great Britain Olympic Development riders in the Junior category are also in top form including Erick Rowsell who last weekend saw off a strong foreign challenge to win the Tour of Wales. Joining Erick will be Luke Rowe who was second in the European Road Race championship this year as well as the Isle of Man’s Mark Christian and Chris Whorrall and Junior Paris Roubaix winner Andy Fenn.

There is also a really strong Junior Women’s squad as well showing how much that area of the sport is coming on now. Already a Silver medallist at the Euro’s Hannah Mayho will be aiming to go one better while Alexandra Greenfield is already a Gold medallist at this level. They will be joined by Katie Colclough, Corrine Hall, Lucy Martin, and Jessica Booth.

There are also riders in the Junior Sprint team who are sure to spring a surprise on their European rivals. Steven Hill produced some fantastic times in the National Junior Championships a few weeks ago and will be racing with World Champion from 2007 Pete Mitchell. Jessica Varnish won two medals last year at the 007 Europeans, Gold and Silver and will be a favourite for her events. Luc Jones from Wales joins them in Poland.

Succes!!
